Vacations are so much fun, but a road trip with kids can be very stressful. Here are some road trip games, activities and ideas to help make your vacation as stress-free as possible!
On our last road trip, I made a travel binder for each kid to help entertain them. I used a three ring binder and filled it with printable games, activities, scrapbook pages, and added page protecters so the kids could collect small items. I also added in our itinerary and pictures of some activities we had planned. Here are some activities to add to your travel binder:
Make a Scavenger Hunt:
- Create your own scavenger hunt or go over to FreePuzzles.net to print one out.
I Spy Bingo:
- Design a bingo chart for a fun game of I Spy. You can also head over here to print one out.
License Plate Game
- When you see a license plate for the first time, the person who identifies the state is rewarded by ‘claiming’ the plate on their map. Go over KC EDventures to get printables and age appropriate ideas for this game.
Learning about States:
- Print out a coloring sheet for each state you will be travel through. I like to use the coloring sheets that include fun facts and information like the ones found at USA Printables. Your kids can learn a bit of history and geography!
Make a Scrapbook:
- Create a place for your kids to document their vacation memories. This is also a great way to kill time in the car and keep your kids writing. Find some pictures or clip art that matches your vacation destination to help you create a personalized scrapbook. If you want to get crafty, check out this tutorial from Snapguide on how to make a Kids’ Passport Scrapbook.
More Road Trip Games and Ideas:
Travel Tokens:
- Use these printable Car Bucks and the Travel Tokens to reward good behavior in the car. Head over to Prepared Not Scared to print these out. Her kids could earn these for good behavior and then trade the Car Bucks in for souvenirs or the Travel Tokens could be traded for a small wrapped gift. Visit the Dollar Store to grab some cheap items for this activity.
100 Mile Party:
- Celebrate every 100 miles with a small party. Have treats, gifts or special rewards to hand out at the party. You can also have different toy bags that you pull out so the kids have something new to play with.
Glow Sticks:
- Make sure to pack some glow sticks if you are traveling at night. This is a cheap way to entertain the kids for a long time.
Cookie Sheets:
- Use a simple cookie sheet as a tray for the kids to color on and keep everything together. The edges will keep small items from rolling off. You can also use this as a magnet board for little ones.
