I’ve been absorbing as much information as possible so I can start smarter…we’ll see!
First, I needed to know my growing (climate) hardiness zone. Most of Missouri is Zone 5b-6a (or plain old 6 to make it easy!).
My next step is to decide and purchase what I will grow this year…
Elements in Time has some wonderful resources for ordering seed as well as tips for the new and seasoned grower.
- I’m thinking of buying all my seed/plants from a local nursery since it’s really too late for me to order and have them shipped. It may not be the cheapest option but I know I can get good advice from them and if I have issues with any of them the nursery will usually replace them for free.
So, I have to figure out which seeds I can start inside and which ones I will need to just wait to plant in the ground (more here), and when the seeds will be ready to transplant (more here). This was the tricky part…and I’m not entirely sure I have it figured out, we’ll see!
I’m planning to start small this year. I tend to over-commit !
- Tomatoes (full size and cherry, planning to start indoor from seed)
- peppers (starting indoor from seed)
- zucchini (sowing directly in the ground)
- strawberries (planting crowns directly in ground)
I think this will be enough for me to learn from and and work around this summer!
Next week I will discuss having my garden tilled so I can start and reparing the soil (along with the almost unavoidable disagreement over garden placement that I will have with my husband AFTER it’s already been tilled and there’s no turning back).
Look for Chrissy’s gardening adventure post, popping up soon!
