Last week Chrissy and I started our first gardens and decided to share the adventure in hopes of getting some good tips and advice! We did get a lot of great resources from several readers and many people provided some inspiration. I am likely adding green beans to my list as a result!
As I mentioned last week, Missouri weather is wishy-washy in April! It actually snowed this weekend. It was cold and windy, yucky weekend!
I did a little more research and contacted some people about tilling the yard for me. We may rent a tiller from our local machinery store and do it ourselves (which means it will be a couple weeks since my husband’s available time is against us!). If you do this yourself or hire someone to do it for you, Chrissy wrote about an important step: get your utilities marked!
This week we will plant the pepper and tomato seeds in egg cartons that I have saved. I poked some very small holes in one since its recycled paperboard and larger holes in the other plastic ones. I will place them drainage trays that I picked up for free from a local gardening store.
I’m having issues deciding where to put them indoors since I really only have space in the family room (downstairs) where they can be undisturbed. I have two little ones! The problem is that there is not enough light. I can take them outside in the morning but again, I deal with the weather factor…a big uncertainty right now. I think we are past our last frost and the weather is supposed to be good this week (but very windy) – in Missouri we say, “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes!”.
Check in next week for a new update…
Share your adventures in gardening with us or offer us some advice…we clearly need it!
