Last week we shared our tips for saving on laundry and you gave us some great ideas to try! Read about it here This week we are going to share how we have started cutting back on electric utility expenses.
We are experimenting to see what changes net us the most savings! Several of these are specific to a warmer climate (as we are in hot, humid, blech! Missouri!). Most can be employed all year long!
- turn the temperature setting UP on the thermostat at night and during the day if you are away from home
- use lighter wieght bed coverings
- position fans throughout the house to circulate cool air
- know where the sun sets in the evening and take steps to insulate that area (close blinds, keep doors closed, etc) from the rest of the home until the sun is down
- unplug items not in use as they continue to draw electricity even when shut off (pay special attention to chargers, items with timers and clocks, and televisions and computers)
- run your appliances (washer, dryer, dishwasher, oven) early or late to take advantage of the cooler house temperatures
- install lower wattage bulbs or start using the new CFL’s in your light fixtures, it will save you money in several ways
Next week we’ll be focusing on cutting back on our water usage!
