Yesterday, I was doing a bit of storytelling which is not my forte but my son seemed so fascinated that I could tell a story without reading a book that I muddled through…with a lot of backtracking! I was telling him the story of the three little pigs because I thought it might be fun to act it out with him, and because he’d never heard it.
In the end, I did a poor recitation (although, he’d never know) and decided we ought to read the actual story. In my Internet search for a copy I found the most amazing websites!
:: First the International Children’s Library, free to use. Tip: REGISTER and select “advanced search”, otherwise you’ll spend a lot of time shuffling through books for varying languages. It’s really neat to get to see the original versions of some classic stories. And here you actually read the book…check it out!
:: Next, Storyplace, also free to use, organized by school age groups. They have animated stories with coordinating activities! Each time you reload the page, a new set of categories pops up!
:: And Rosetta Project’s Children’s Books Online full of classics, some are read aloud. These are mostly antique, illustrated books. Which again, I think is really cool!
Don’t forget to check out the SavvySource for Parents widget on our right sidebar! This will give you some great ideas for activities and books that your child will enjoy while strengthening their skills!
Now, I am still looking for that site where authors or celebrities read books aloud…I cannot remember the name of it and it’s not searchable (apparently)! Can you help?
