Here in the Green Space, we’re proponents of making small changes because we know that they do add up. We’ve posted about a number of ideas that can start you down the path of more eco-friendly living. We’ve written about using reusable shopping bags, shopping for organics within a budget, saving energy around the house, environmentally friendly cleaners you can buy and those you can make, and more. We challenge you to pick one (or many!) of these or other simple ideas to try to incorporate into your life in January and beyond. You may be surprised at how easy it really is to make eco-friendly choices and save money at the same time.

- Rechargeable batteries are faster to charge and less expensive than ever before. Commit to stocking yourself up in a common household size like AA or AAA and using those (and only those!) for this year.
- Rinse out plastic bags and reuse them before tossing. Even if you don’t want to store food in them a second time, puzzle pieces, Legos, coupons and other small household items all find a new home easily in storage bags of different sizes.
- Join your local Freecycle network. Whether you unexpectedly come upon something you thought you would have to buy or you find a location for an item eating up precious space in your home (and that would otherwise hit the landfill), it’s easy to join and, as the name implies, won’t cost you a cent!
- Commit to not buy anything one or two days of the week. It’s common knowledge that consumerism is often the enemy of eco-friendly living.
- Hang one load of laundry to dry per week. Indoor drying racks work well for this purpose. You could even try posting a “want” ad on Freecycle if you don’t own a drying rack.
