It’s still early enough in 2009 that wishing someone a “Happy New Year” would not be a completely strange salutation, and yet, according to the ticker at reusablebags.com, 24.5 billion plastics bags have already been consumed this year. That number is so big I cannot comprehend it, and I can only try to imagine how much space in a landfill that many bags would fill. The good news is that replacing plastic grocery sacks with reusable bags is a simple step toward a greener, more eco-friendly lifestyle that will make a positive, long-term impact on our planet.
Green Bag Lady was recently featured on CNN. She has made and given away over 3000 reusable bags. She used to give a hand-made bag made from recycled fabric to anyone who asked, but she is no longer able to keep up with the volume of requests she’s received. However, she continues to give out free bags through giveaways at her site and at certain events. The next event where she will be handing out free bags is the Live Green Expo in Plano, Texas on March 18.
In addition to inspiring many to use fabric instead of paper or plastic bags, Green Bag Lady also has free patterns available on her site for grocery bags, produce bags and gift wrap bags.
Also, be sure to check out my previous post about how to make a fabric bag out of an old t-shirt. It’s an easy project that only takes about five minutes. However you chose to acquire them–whether by purchasing, winning or making your own–using fabric bags rather than plastic or paper is a simple step toward eco-friendly living that I encourage everyone to take.
