In 2004, a study from the University of Arizona revealed that forty to fifty percent of edible food is never consumed. A different government study estimated the amount of edible food waste to be slightly lower at 27 percent, a number that still works out to be around a pound of food each day for each American. This waste costs American consumers and manufacturers billions of dollars each year. The researcher behind the Arizona study estimated that food waste costs each family of four almost $50 a month. Reducing food waste would noticeably reduce a family’s food budget as well as result in less landfill waste.
But what’s the big deal about food ending up in the landfill? Doesn’t it just biodegrade? Food waste is actually the biggest landfill contributor to methane gas production which, in turn, contributes to global climate change. That means that less food waste will result in less methane gas. So, when you reduce the amount of edible food your family throws away, you’ll not only be lowering your grocery bill, but also you’ll be doing a little to help reduce the production of greenhouse gases.
In February, one of my favorite green blogs, Crunchy Chicken, is holding a Food Waste Reduction Challenge. You can read more about the Food Waste Reduction Challenge at Crunchy Chicken’s website. If you need a little extra accountability for reducing your food waste, I encourage you to join Crunchy’s challenge. If you need a little more motivation or information for making greener choices in a wide variety of areas, I highly recommend Crunchy Chicken as a source of both. She regularly hosts challenges and posts articles packed with information on eco-friendly lifestyle changes.
