We started our green journey almost 2 years ago. As new moms we were inspired to create a healthier home and environment for our little ones. We wanted to do everything possible to be green and have a healthy home BUT we felt we just couldn’t afford to do it. We started doing tons of research and with some trial and error, discovered we could easily afford to be green; in fact we were saving even more money by being green!
Green Cleaning
Cleaning products are a necessary evil, right? We really liked having a clean home (at least the idea of it) but all the “tools” necessary to get it that way were labeled with “Danger” or “Caution”, “Hazardous” and “Toxic”. We found ourselves barricading the kids in a separate room of the house when we cleaned for fear they would inhale or lick something deadly! To our great relief, we found both homemade and green commercial cleaners that worked better and were much safer than the ones we grew up using. For example, we found a super concentrated glass cleaner that only cost one penny to make (yes we said one penny). Changing this one cleaner saved us $18 a year and was safer to use around our kids! Don’t believe us; click here to check it out for yourself.
Next we conquered the laundry room and learned how to save over a $100 on laundry detergent alone! We slowly switched all our old unfriendly detergents with safe eco-friendly and healthier alternatives and saved ourselves over a hundred dollars a year.
Onward!
We were so inspired by our cleaning success that we looked for ways to go green in the kitchen. We both pride ourselves on giving our families the healthiest food possible so when we discovered a way to get fresh, local, and organic produce inexpensively we were doing cartwheels!
Once we saw how simple it truly was to “go green” and realized we could do it centsably, there was no stopping us. We found small and simple things we could do all over the house to be better to ourselves, our families and the environment, all the while saving money.
Even things we were certain couldn’t be changed…
Our biggest discovery was with our utilities. We learned that we didn’t have to turn off our air conditioners or heaters off to save big money. The key is in understanding how your utility company measures and bills your usage and be smart about when and how you use them. Chrissy was on level pay for her electric and gas bill. Her family found simple and easy changes that they slowly made over the year. They only spent $100 to do this but saw big savings. After one year they cut their monthly electric bill from $123 to $61 and their gas bill from $93 to $55. That is over $1200 this year they will be saving on utilities alone! That is serious money!!
