A few weeks ago the girls saw a very cute ribbon tutu and feel in love! I thought it was so cute, until I looked at the price tag and saw that the tutu was $30. After looking at this for a minute I realized that this might be something I could actually make myself. The girls got very excited when I told them we could try to make this at home.
The girls helped to cut the ribbons and sort them by color. I was able to make these for around $8 each (I got my ribbon 50% off and used a 40% off coupon for the elastic). We got countless compliments at the game last week (go MU) and I was very proud to tell everyone I made them!
Direction (from eHow):
- Gather or purchase ribbons. Look for a variety of ribbons and choose both wide and narrow ribbons. More ribbon will make a fuller and prettier tutu.
-
Cut your ribbon into the desired length. To make an 11-inch to 12-inch ribbon skirt, you will cut approximately 2-foot lengths of ribbon. For an 18-inch skirt, cut 3-foot lengths of ribbon.
-
Cut your elastic to the child’s waist measurement. Overlap slightly and pin with a safety pin or sew the ends together with a needle and thread.
-
Fold a length of ribbon in half and place it under the elastic. The ends should extend on one side and a loop on the other. Thread the ends through the loop, making a basic slip knot. Repeat with the remaining ribbon.
-
Tie beads or bells onto the ends of some of the ribbons if desired. You may also want to stitch a few silk flowers onto the waistband of your ribbon tutu.
