When MaryJo Thompson took over as Box Tops coordinator for St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Kansas City, MO, this ambitious former police officer armed herself with information. Jumping in with both feet, MaryJo attended webinars, joined the Box Top Facebook community and began investigating how to bolster funds for her preK-8 school of just over 300 students. This small school was able to earn $2,150.50!
MaryJo’s creative twist on a clever “Be a Box Tops Detective” campaign jumpstarted the school year; and her persistence paid off. She handed out detective tools including a flashlight, magnifying glass, paper pad and pencil so the students had a lot of fun searching.
MaryJo also worked with her school’s communications officer to submit a press release to the local newspaper, which announced that the school was actively accepting Box Tops. Within just a few hours of having the story run in the paper, she got a call from a woman who said she’d been collecting Box Tops but wasn’t sure who to give them to. She stopped by her house that same day and she handed her 150 Box Tops!
Did you know that Box Tops for Education has earned $525 million for schools across the country since 1996! In just the past year alone, Box Tops donated $47 million to schools across the United States. With school budget cuts happening across the nation, Box Tops has become increasingly important as it provides unrestricted dollars to help schools, and the program is urging people to get involved to help meet its goal of helping America’s schools earn another $75 million by the end of 2013.
Box Tops can be a great way to give back to your community without spending any extra emoney! Become a “Box Top Detective” and make a difference!
