The holidays are over, so now it’s birthday time! All of my kids are born in mid-March. My oldest will be 4 and my triplets will be 1. That means I am knee deep in party planning right now, an expensive endeavor made additionally difficult by how resource-intensive parties are.
Some ideas for keeping celebrations green and frugal:
- Invitations — Skip the paper invitations and do an electronic version instead. You can use an online service or just send out an email on your own. You’ll save on the cost of the cards and on postage, too.
- Goody bags — When my big kid came home with just a cool bouncy ball he got from the “prize bag” at a birthday party instead of a plastic bag full of little plastic toys, I was thrilled. How about selecting one nicer item to give to party goers? We’ll be giving the four year olds some homemade granola bars and recycled crayons in different shapes.
- Bringing it all home — If your party isn’t at home, remember your reusable bags to bring home gifts, unused paper goods, and wrapping paper to be recycled.
- Disposables — Use paper plates, napkins, cups and utensils you already have stashed around the house instead of purchasing new for the occasion. Splurge on a great (and reusable) tablecloth that complements your theme with your savings while also clearing out some cabinet clutter. Win win! I still love the tablecloth and decorations we used for our oldest son’s first birthday party (pictured below).
Every one of these ideas will save you money in addition to saving resources, and I’m certainly looking for more. What great green party ideas do you have to share?
