All month I will be featuring my favorite money saving tips from my readers! Today you can save money by organizing your freezer.
Organize Your Freezer:
We have a large chest freezer that allows us to buy meat and other frozen foods in bulk to save money (even a 1/4 cow once a year!). However, it’s easy to lose things in the bottom of that freezer. We keep a list of everything in the freezer and cross items off the list when it is removed and cooked. We add to the list when something new goes into the freezer. My husband also keeps the inside of the freezer organized so we can find the items we need quickly. If we don’t know what’s in the freezer, it doesn’t get used and ends up in the trash – no cost savings there!

Our freezer is in our basement garage and we’ve tried a variety of inventory systems without success but the latest is working pretty well. I made a list in Google docs and shared it with my husband. It’s in a spreadsheet so it’s easy to sort by name, date into freezer and/or expiration date to find out what’s oldest. We can easily update it from the computer or our phones. We usually work on our meal plan while we are waiting on our kids somewhere so it’s handy to have the list with us.

A friend of mine uses different colored reusable cloth bags with handles to hold her things in. Green for veggies, blue for chicken, brown for beef, etc. She also uses milk crates (2 layers), so she has no wasted space at the bottom of her freezer. She places the handled bags inside the crates, nothing gets lost in the bottom and the handles make it easy to lift the frozen items out.
